Professor Gordon McVie, director-general of the Cancer Research Campaign, denounced the government's £40m four-year national cancer plan announced this week and said that treatment in Scottish hospitals was "Third World".

McVie said 60,000 Scots would die before the "UK" government's plan is fully implemented.

McVie said "It is appalling that patients should die on the waiting list for palliative radiotherapy [to reduce pain in cancer patients], -that's Third World and it is happening in Scotland."
