Scottish Politics professor digs himself a hole
James Mitchell, Professor of Politics at the University of Strathclyde published
an article in the Sunday Times in London this weekend that makes one true
conclusion, simply that the Scots need FULL fiscal devolution, ie. full
control over the collection of ALL taxes collected in Scotland and the manner
in which those taxes are then spent in Scotland.
However, he asserted in a truly pro Scottish-English Unionist mindset that
the Scottish parliament spent without taxing and that it relied on 'handouts
from London' via the Barnett formula.
Nothing could be further from the truth. The Scots pay income tax to
London, they pay social security (national insurance) to London, they pay
National Insurance (medicare type tax) to London, they pay VAT (sales tax
to London), they pay 73% fuel tax to London, they pay over all the petroleum
and royalty taxes on SCOTLANDS oil and gas to London.
Then we get a pittance back from London under the Barnett formula.
We Scots are taxed to death by Englands parliament, we need FULL
fiscal independence NOW - why should LONDON benefit from high crude oil
price hikes and gas price hikes and the Scots see NOTHING back?
SCRAP THE BARNETT FORMULA
REMEMBER SCOTLANDS OIL AND GAS ARE HERS NOT ENGLANDS
ALLOW US TO TAX AND SPEND WITH NO INTERFERENCE
