Documents of crucial importance to Scotlands history are being left to rot in damp, cramped conditions rather than being treasured as part of our history that must be cherished.

A report going to the Scottish parliament says that "The picture of inadequate staffing, seriously unsatisfactory buildings and administrative neglect is not one of which the country can be proud."
